The Cultural Ecotone Walk

  • September 22, 2022
  • Curriculum, Resources, Writing

The Cultural Ecotone Walk was originally developed in the San Francisco Bay area with the help of middle and high school students. The ecological concept of an ecotone was applied to culturally distinct neighborhoods and used to explore the physical and cultural boundaries of the neighborhoods. In San Francisco we explored the Chinatown and North Beach with middle and high school students. Recently we used the activity with graduate students in Seattle exploring the International-Central District ecotone. The activity provides opportunities to explore cultural histories, comparative economic and cultural development, migration and settlement, urban ecology, and the relationship of the built environment to demographic patterns of various kinds.
