SUMMARY:Environmental Justice and Air Quality in the Era of Citizen Science
DESCRIPTION:Running-Grass will be making a presentation at the 2020 Air Quality and Health Workshop in Vancouver\, B.C. in February.  The theme of this year’s conference is “Environmental Justice of Air Quality in the Era of Citizen Science”.  His presentation focuses on the policy implications of EJ and the value of cultural assets and social capital in community based science projects.\nThe focus of  the BC Lung Association’s upcoming 17th Annual Air Quality and Health Workshop is the environmental justice of air quality in the era of citizen science. \nMarginalized communities are often disproportionately exposed to environmental hazards in comparison with the overall population. In response\, the environmental justice movement has evolved\, with a focus on equitable distribution of environmental benefits and burdens. The concept of environmental justice includes not only equal protection for all people under environmental laws\, regulations\, and policies\, but also significant involvement of potentially impacted communities in environmental policy and natural resource development decisions. \nOrganized annually\, the workshop brings together air quality and environmental health experts and policymakers to share new insights regarding priority public health issues. \nRegister Here

DESCRIPTION:How people talk (or don’t talk) about race in their workplaces and educational environments is a strong indicator on whether an organization has an inclusive culture. It’s high-stakes! \nIntentionally preparing executives\, managers\, supervisors\, administrators\, faculty\, students\, and/or employees at all levels to engage in frank and\, at most times\, difficult conversations around diversity\, equity\, and inclusion is a strategic action towards mitigating risk\, improving communication\, and increasing productivity. \nThe People’s Gathering: A Revolution of Consciousness conference is a professional/personal development learning experience and networking opportunity designed to move the (often dreaded) “Race Conversation” forward. The conference creates a supportive space in which participants engage in frank and open dialogue about race and racial disparities that are systemically present in work\, school\, and everyday life. They become more aware of how race shows up as structural barriers to realizing a diverse and inclusive environment and learn ways to navigate the sensitivity of it all by deepening personal understanding of the issues. \nWhen first held in 2017\, The People’s Gathering gathered over 200 participants from all levels of government\, education\, business\, and non-profit sectors. She is a graduate of the City of Seattle’s Race and Social Justice Core Team training. Belinda is passionate about nurturing a new generation of environmentalists that reflects the diverse demographic of 2042 with the skills to facilitate environmental justice literacy\, community building\, and civic engagement. In 2012\, she helped establish the Seattle Chapter of Environmental Professionals of Color (EPOC)\, a project of the Center for Diversity and the Environment based out of Portland\, OR. DESCRIPTION:This experiential and lecture based workshop gives teachers opportunities to explore personal racial and cultural histories that shape their interactions with students\, curricula and teaching strategies.
